Thailand is a beautiful place, I must say and you will not regret visiting the place. Of late have heard of some political unrest which you can get advice from the Indian embassy website before you travel. We covered  Bangkok  and Phuket (4 nights in  Bangkok  +  4 nights  in Phuket). 4 days was really lavish for us in  Bangkok  and it was great because there was no hurry burry. We were at ease to see the places.  Coz some of the places we visited for example the tiger temple- takes one whole day.   We didn't go on package tour, we booked through expedia- hotel and got a decent deal. I would suggest you go on your own.  You really do not need a package tour guidance, coz tourism is so well promoted there (their main economy is tourism), it is very structured and organized and they are very helpful.
